Day 15 Poolewe to Plockton

Suspect this might be a saga in stages to upload depending on the position of the starts.

Yet another day of new landscapes. With a longish day ahead we set off early though not before the midges had got up their enthusiasm for flesh not dampened by the night’s rainfall. If roads don’t go around peninsulars they go over – and so it proved today on several steep occasions, with a common factor the great views as you pause to remember what regular breathing is like.

We knew we are heading south as once familiar things reappear. Firstly a roundabout. True it was in the middle of nowhere celebrating a designer’s vision of necessity.  Secondly a railway reappeared and paralleled a great traverse towards Kyle of Lochalsh. Here we came across a railway station request stop, also advising there are no taxis nor buses.  4 houses though.  Thirdly the reappearance of Tesco delivery vans – not something expected along the single track roads.

At Achnascheen ( look it up, it’s twinned with back of beyond), the strange looking flat top man made heaps turn out to be 10000yr old river delta deposits.  We’d arrived there via  the lovely Loch Maree with Beinne Eighe ( pronounced as in Elton John’s Ben eh and the Jets) ever present and it’s vestige of old Scots Pine recognised in the first UK National Nature Reserve of 1951.

Today’s roads were first class – we fair tore into the 69miles. If the long pass up out of Kinlochewe was a joy – the descent was a screamer.  As usual the last 5 miles are challenging – this time the superlative reward is Plockton, sun soaked and idyllic.
